Wawel Polish Restaurant: A Taste of Poland in Metro Detroit

Nestled within the American Polish Cultural Center in Troy, Wawel Polish Restaurant is more than just a place to eat; it’s a culinary journey rooted in a deep passion for sharing authentic Polish flavors. From the moment the American Polish Cultural Society opened its doors in the current building in 1990, there was a strong desire to create a welcoming space where friends and guests could gather and enjoy traditional Polish cuisine.

For many years, the restaurant flourished, becoming a beloved attraction with its weekly fish dinners and countless pierogi meticulously crafted by the dedicated “pierogi committee.” Patrons flocked not only for the fantastic food but also for the lively live music every Friday – a tradition we’re excited to bring back this year.

What’s in a Name?
The Legacy of Wawel

The name Wawel Polish Restaurant wasn’t adopted until the late 2000s. The goal was to establish a distinct identity, setting it apart from the American Polish Cultural Center and solidifying its reputation as a recognizable Polish dining destination in Metro Detroit.

So, what does “Wawel” mean? Wawel (pronounced “VAH-vel”) refers to one of Poland’s most iconic and largest castles, majestically situated in Kraków. Built by King Casimir III the Great between the 11th and 12th centuries, the Wawel Royal Castle is a breathtaking complex of structures from various periods, all centered around a beautiful Italian-style main courtyard. It sits proudly on Wawel Hill, overlooking the Vistula River.

Perhaps one of its most famous tales revolves around the legendary Wawel Dragon, “Smok Wawelski,” believed to have lived beneath the castle on Wawel Hill. Today, the Wawel Royal Castle is a must-see attraction for countless tourists, with a captivating dragon sculpture outside that breathes fire every hour for a few minutes, offering a spectacular show for visitors!

Our Wawel Polish Restaurant in Troy pays homage to this historic Polish landmark. Inside our dining room, you’ll find a striking large painting of Wawel Royal Castle, painted by local artist Katarzyna Korytowska. This artwork is meant to give our guests a glimpse into the magnificence of the Wawel Castle in Kraków.
